The fascinating and diverse world of cannabinoids
Cannabinoids are a group of naturally occurring compounds associated with hemp and cannabis plants. They have long attracted interest in both scientific and public discussions, and their diversity makes them a fascinating subject. More than a hundred different cannabinoids have been identified, each with its own unique chemical structure and properties.
The human body contains what is known as the endocannabinoid system, a part of the body’s complex regulatory network. It consists of endocannabinoids produced by the body itself, receptors (such as CB1 and CB2), and enzymes that regulate how these compounds function. The endocannabinoid system acts as a kind of messenger and balancing mechanism across many biological processes.
Although this system has existed as long as humans have, our understanding of its role continues to evolve. Discussion around it remains active, with interpretations ranging widely—as often happens when chemistry, biology, and culture intersect.
Types of Cannabinoid Oils
Our store offers two kinds of cannabinoid oils: isolates and broad-spectrum oils.
An isolate oil contains only a specific cannabinoid, separated from all other plant compounds.
A broad-spectrum oil combines CBD with a range of other naturally occurring plant compounds—such as CBG, CBN, CBDV, CBC, CBL, CBT and CBE—along with terpenes and flavonoids, while remaining completely THC-free.
The strength of the oil determines the ratio of different cannabinoids present. For example, in a 30% broad-spectrum CBD oil, the total cannabinoid content is about 33.3%, of which 30% is CBD and the remainder consists of other cannabinoids.
Most Common Cannabinoids
CBD (cannabidiol) is one of the best-known cannabinoids. Unlike THC, which is responsible for the intoxicating effects of cannabis, CBD is non-psychoactive. The interaction between CBD and other cannabinoids within the endocannabinoid system is complex, and scientific interest in it remains strong.
THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) is the compound associated with cannabis’s intoxicating effects. Its impact varies depending on several factors, such as strain and dosage. All oils in the Weedz store are completely THC-free.
CBG (cannabigerol) is often referred to as the “mother cannabinoid,” as it acts as a precursor to many others, including CBD and THC. It is rarer and is found in higher concentrations in younger plants before converting into other compounds.
CBN (cannabinol) is a natural cannabinoid formed over time as THC oxidizes under exposure to light, air, or heat. In other words, CBN is not abundant in fresh plants but develops gradually during storage or processing. It is non-psychoactive and often regarded as one of the plant’s natural by-products of aging.
CBDV (cannabidivarin) is structurally similar to CBD but occurs naturally in smaller amounts in certain hemp and cannabis varieties. CBDV belongs to the “varin” family of cannabinoids, characterized by distinct chemical properties.
CBC (cannabichromene) is one of the plant’s natural cannabinoids, typically found in small amounts alongside others. It is non-psychoactive, and its structure shares similarities with both CBD and THC. CBC is considered one of the lesser-known cannabinoids whose role within the plant’s overall composition is still being studied.
CBL (cannabicyclol) is a lesser-known, non-psychoactive cannabinoid that forms naturally as the plant ages and its chemical compounds change over time. CBL often arises from the breakdown or conversion of other cannabinoids, such as CBC, under the influence of light and oxygen.
CBT (cannabitriol) is a rare, non-psychoactive cannabinoid found only in very small amounts in the cannabis plant. Interest in CBT has grown alongside other minor cannabinoids, as their combined presence contributes to the plant’s complex and diverse profile.
CBE (cannabielsoin) is another rare cannabinoid, formed mainly through the oxidation and breakdown of CBD. It belongs to a group of secondary compounds that appear only in trace amounts within the plant. CBE’s existence highlights the plant’s natural transformation processes and chemical dynamism, where compounds evolve over time and under environmental factors.
The Harmony of Natural Compounds
The spectrum of cannabinoids is broad and intricate. Each compound—whether a well-known one like CBD or THC, or a lesser-known one such as CBG, CBN, CBDV, CBC, CBL, CBT, or CBE—forms part of the plant’s natural chemical composition. They differ in structure and abundance, yet together they create the complex profile that makes hemp and cannabis so unique.
Although the interactions between cannabinoids continue to be explored, it is clear that this is a multilayered and evolving field of study. Each compound is a small piece of a larger whole, where nature weaves together chemistry, biology, and time.
In broad-spectrum products, this diversity is reflected subtly: the compounds work side by side, forming a natural balance that mirrors the plant’s original composition. Weedz products are designed to honor this natural harmony—simply, purely, and transparently, without unnecessary promises.
Additional Terminology
Terpenes are aromatic compounds found in many plants—including hemp—that give each variety its characteristic scent and flavor. They are not cannabinoids, but they contribute to the plant’s overall profile and individuality. Common terpenes include limonene, myrcene, and pinene, which also occur in herbs, fruits, and spices.
Flavonoids are natural pigments and antioxidant compounds found widely throughout the plant kingdom. In hemp, they influence the plant’s color, aroma, and natural defense mechanisms. While not cannabinoids, flavonoids work together with terpenes and other compounds to create the plant’s rich chemical diversity.
MCT Oil is typically derived from coconuts and used as a carrier oil in many products, including cannabinoid oils. MCT stands for Medium Chain Triglycerides, or medium-chain fatty acids. Its role is to ensure even consistency and stability, helping cannabinoids distribute uniformly throughout the mixture. MCT oil is neutral in flavor, lightweight, and easy to use as a base oil.
